Downton Abbey
If you are looking for a TV series to start, and you have not yet seen Downton Abbey, let me just say you must start it now!
I watched it after the show had already ended on TV (found it on Amazon Prime), and I have to admit I was hooked from the very first episode.
Besides learning about life in the beginning of the 20th century England, you can’t help but appreciate all the customs, traditions, clothing of the time, and perspective on life and society in general.
Downton Abbey is the type of show that leaves you feeling light, excited for the next episode, and wanting to drink fancy afternoon tea in your grandmother’s china.
Last year the beautiful Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida hosted the Downton Abbey exhibit, and of course I had to pay a visit.
It was wonderful to relief the show through the various artifacts, actual clothing used by the characters, and my favorite part, the table settings.
No detail was left unturned when it came to the dinner table here. I was excited to hear they also hosted a dinner with an etiquette expert to discuss the customs at the time.
Since the menu reflected food preferences from the time, there would not be anything vegan so I didn’t partake in this activity, but otherwise I would have loved to be there!
The fashion pieces didn’t disappoint either. I was so pleased to be able to see the gowns up and close, and be able to soak in every detail.
Below are some of the simpler outfits, that would have been worn during ordinary days.
Below are examples of more formal attire, perfect for hosting elaborate dinners at home.
For the ladies, every outfit was paired with the perfect pair of gloves, that would basically never leave their hands except at the dinner table.
And for the gentlemen, the stiffer the shirt, the better.
Other items from the set that were displayed included dishes from “downstairs”, gramphone, and various pieces of furniture.
Can’t you just picture Mrs. Hughes standing there?
This was a lovely exhibit and I recommend it if it comes to a museum near you. You will not regret it!
Just beware there is a gift shop that accompanies the exhibit and you will feel tempted to walk out of there looking like Lady Mary herself!
If you love this series as much as I do, you’ll probably feel like there’s an empty space inside once you watch the last episode. No? Just me?
Well, in any case, you should be glad to know that the case of Downton Abbey will be returning to the screen, this time on the big screen, with the Downton Abbey movie!
I’m so excited about this, especially because all of the main characters will be taking part in the movie.
The movie is scheduled to be released in September of 2019.
